This is a question people often ask. Sadly, often when you tell them you are a freelance virtual assistant (VA)! LOL.
Although a VA is becoming much more widely recognised, and certainly a more popular profession, since the effects of Covid-19 where the majority of people went to work from home. In line with the government Stay Home and Stay Safe. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/stayathome-and-stay-safe.
So let’s look at what a VA is. Firstly, VA stands for virtual assistant. A
virtual assistant provides the same administration support services as an
executive assistant (EA) or a personal assistant (PA) – just online! So instead
of being in your office, they are working remotely and often part time.
However, with most meetings now happening via Teams or Zoom these days, VAs can
still provide the same level of service as a PA or EA who is based in the
office.
A business VA normally provides typing, proofreading, document production
and formatting, data entry, inbox detox, inbox management, calendar management,
travel and accommodation bookings as well as project work. Head over to my Services page for more info!

An extremely high percentage of VAs are self-employed. I am a self-employed
freelancer. Check out my Welcome page.
Anyway, the fact they are often self-employed means there are no employment
costs such as salary, recruitment, holiday pay, pension, etc. for your company.
With a VA you just pay for the work you need! Most VAs do also offer retainers.
I certainly do at Online Exec PA. Check out my Prices & Payments page.

VAs can be ideal if you only need administrative assistance on an ad-hoc
basis. Hopefully after reading this blog, you have more insight into what a VA
is and can do for you!
